“Not Like Us”

If you have a television, you probably just finished watching the 59th Super Bowl, which held the most memorable, iconic, and historic halftime performance of all time. If you watched it and didn’t feel this way about it, I encourage you to dig a little deeper. Do some research, get curious about what it means, the symbolism, the lyrics, every single part of it. If you feel defensive or aggravated in any way, I encourage you to keep digging and look a little deeper- inwardly too.

I tend to stay away from ANYTHING political because I find that for me, personally, it is not healthy. But this isn’t about the extremely annoying battle between Democrats and Republicans… this is much deeper into our history as a whole. As Americans. As human beings.

It’s not easy to push your ego aside and it’s even harder to try and forget everything you’ve ever learned or been “groomed” with. Defenses automatically go up and emotions run high. But why? Ask yourself why you get bothered or what exactly bothers you. Educate yourself on the main person or subject that is getting you worked up or that you’re dismissing. It’s surprising how much you can learn about others and most importantly, about yourself. Growth is one of the most beautiful, transformative, and powerful things that can happen to a person. True, honest, deep down, reflective growth that comes from the heart and soul. It’s why we are even here on this planet. To grow and evolve. Why are we SO deeply opposed to anything or anyone different from us??!

As a white woman of privilege, who has had the honor of surrounding myself with different races, ethnicities, and cultures… I am touched and proud of Kendrick Lamar for his lyrics, talent, courage, strength, and soul. I salute him and will honor Black History Month by continuing to educate myself. I hope to never stop learning or growing into a better human being.

At the end of the day, we need to stop creating and choosing sides. Look at facts. Listen. Learn. We are ALL human beings. Please be a good one, be a real one.
