One Day at a Time

The slogan "One Day at a Time" is often used in AA. It's quite obnoxious when you're in the midst of something because it seems like the least helpful bit of advice, however, it's something that helps me know, in several areas of my life.

I once had a neurologist who told me "Your life isn't just day by day, it's minute by minute." The only thing predictable about Multiple Sclerosis is that it's unpredictable. I took his words to mean that I should have fun and just live in the moment... which I still try to live by to some extent, but when I was drinking, it became more reckless and selfish. I try not to look back too much, because it can get dark for me, but sometimes it's necessary to remember and face my shame. I need to be humble enough to realize that addiction can get anyone, and I am not exempt.

Living life one day at a time can help reduce stress and anxiety, allowing you to focus on the present moment. It can bring such peace and clarity.

Here are some strategies that I find helpful:

1. Practice Mindfulness

Engage in mindfulness exercises such as meditation, deep breathing, or yoga. These practices can help you stay grounded in the present.

2. Set Daily Goals

Establish small, achievable goals each day. This gives you a sense of purpose and accomplishment without overwhelming you. Start small.

3. Limit Future Worry

Try to avoid overthinking about the future. Focus on what you can control today and take things step by step. Remember, even baby steps are still steps.

4. Reflect at the End of Each Day

Take a moment each evening to reflect and take revenue on your day. Consider what went well and what you can improve, without dwelling on your mistakes. Write it down and acknowledge your growth.

5. Cultivate Gratitude

Keep a gratitude journal where you jot down things that you're thankful for each day. This helps shift your focus to positive aspects of your life. Even the smallest things add up to help recognize the gifts all around you. If you can't think of anything at all, do something kind for someone else. Make someone else feel grateful.

6. Engage in Activities You Enjoy

Make time for hobbies and activities that bring you joy. This can enhance your overall well-being and help you appreciate the present. Something as simple as a bubble bath with candles or a delicious meal. Draw, paint, tap into your creativity.

7. Build a Supportive Routine

Create a daily routine that includes healthy habits, such as regular meals, exercise, and adequate sleep, to promote a balanced lifestyle. This is one that I, myself, need to get better at. I tend to loathe routines because it makes me feel boring; however, I NEED a routine to keep me focused and out of trouble. I'm still working on making my bed in the morning. For some reason, this one is so hard for me to keep!

Remember that things can change in an instant and no one can predict the future, so worrying about it will do nothing but cause you stress and anxiety. Remind yourself that you cannot control anyone but yourself, so keep the focus on you. Most importantly, show yourself grace for past mistakes, and realize that you wake up every single day and decide who you want to be. Then go on with your bad self and get it!
